With Mother’s Day less than a week away, I find myself remembering other Mothers Days. When I was a child it became important to me to make my own gifts for Mom. She received some very strange pieces of “art”. Always, she said it was just the perfect gift and found ways to compliment me on my effort, my choice of color or style. I discovered gift baskets were a great way to combine a number of ‘special treats’ very inexpensively. Especially as Mothers’ Day is right after Easter. I just saved my baskets (and I shudder to think now) some of my candy.
I wrote poems for my Mom, I drew pictures and painted macaroni glued to construction paper and tucked them in my basket. I picked the tulips from our garden and the occasional dandelion. If the basket looked a little meager I even raided Mother’s pantry for baking chocolate, coconut and my favorite puddings. And she loved it all; she said she could tell it was made with love by the light in my eyes. I felt so proud.
As the years passed and I gave up childish things, and like the rest of us, found myself cramped for both time and money. While I was in school it was assignments and my part-time job. It was hard enough to stay on top, so Mothers’ Day was less and less personal. Of course, I got home and spent the day with Mom. She would be so happy to see me and spend time with me.
But I forgot how much Mothers’ Day meant to me until I was married and my daughter brought me a ceramic heart she made for me “with love.” And once again I remembered the special joy in giving as I looked in my daughters eyes and saw the ‘light in her eyes.’
I’m still busy and many times money is not as plentiful as we would like – but I make sure to remember my Mother with a Gift Basket filled with love. I start with her favorites like cheese and crackers, fresh fruit and then when speaking with the florist we add special things to customize the basket just for Mom.
Today gift baskets have so many options like – wine, or flowers, or specialty coffees and gourmet treats. You can also find a whole selection of organic products. One of my Mother’s favorites is the ingredients in the spa baskets, so I make sure to include a little pampering with skin products and foot soaks.
This year I am in the west and Mother is on the eastern seaboard, so I found some special huckleberry products to add. And while it’s not the same as being there, Mom knows I have personally selected all of the items in her delivered gourmet gift basket and packed it with love.
It’s not too late to send your Mom some love today.
